New music: Day Wave

Samantha Beggins

Day Wave released EP "Hard to Read" March 4th via Grand Jury!

In an interview with NME (after NME named him their "New Act Of The Week") Jackson Phillips, the man behind Day Wave, explained how Day Wave came to be: “The music that I love is guitar driven,” he explains, “and I felt all these bands trying to rehash synthpop were getting a little stale. I wanted to make more guitar led music and that was the idea for Day Wave. So I just was like ‘fuck it, I could figure out guitar, it can’t be that hard.’”

"Headcase Review"

Jackson Phillips’ solo project of Day Wave has potential.

I’d want to be laying out on the beach on a hot summer day listening to this, or maybe on a long car ride once I’m at the point of just chilling out. It’s very relaxing and dreamy.

If you’re in that in between period of your life, where a lot of 20 somethings find themselves, where you don’t really know your purpose or what you’re doing- it can be comforting listening to music that kind of fits your mood. I feel like Day Wave does just that, with his songs “Nothing At All” and “We Try But We Don’t Fit In.”

In “Nothing At All” Phillips asks the question “What am I good for?” that he later answers with “nothing at all.” Later in the song are also the lyrics “...Spend my days alone, lost in my head.” In “We Try But We Don’t Fit In” he sings “We don’t fit in, not even a little bit.” In “Headcase,” the EP’s title track, he sings about not feeling right anymore and  someone being on his mind all the time- which is relatable for mostly everyone.

Everyone loves misery with company, and not that this music is miserable (quite the opposite), but it definitely takes you down a 'questioning life' path where you'll want to take comfort in music and the fact that others feel the same way and you're not alone with your thoughts.

There’s a definite Death Cab For Cutie/ Tame Impala/ Lana Del Rey vibe to the music. It has that chill, flowy quality.
