Grey Lamb

When you think of local Indiana music, rap likely isn't the genre that comes to mind. And given the state of high school arts programs, you likely wouldn't expect a college band to be top notch. Yet West Lafayette's Grey Lamb defies all preconceived notions of who they should be, and encourage you to to do the same.

The Taste of Tippecanoe festival is usually known for its amazing food vendors and overpriced bottles of water, but people are likely talking about the musical performances after this year. Unfortunately, Grey Lamb's early time slot prevented them from drawing a huge crowd. This didn't stop them, however, from giving their all.

To get an idea of their sound, think of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' hits, throw in some Indie artifacts, and turn the lyrics into motivating poetry. It's appealing to all ages, and definitely something you need to check out if you enjoy pop music but dislike the superficiality of the pop industry (like me). These guys have captured that energy without losing any artistry.

Frontman David constantly provides something to look at with his soulful gestures, man bun, and erratic dancing (see photos, it'll make more sense). Despite being tethered behind his setup, keyboardist __ pours his heart into every note. An important element to any aspect of bandhood-- writing, recording, performing, etc.-- is camaraderie, and this trip just radiates it.

The boys were also joined on stage by local dance group A League Entertainment for a song or two. Their free styling provided an entirely new spectacular spectacle, and they were encouraged by band member and audience member alike to continue in front of the stage after their planned songs.

You can catch Grey Lamb at shows around Purdue-- and you should. If my intuition is correct, these guys likely won't be on the local scene for very long.
