She Wants Revenge

As what seemed to be a continuation of a trend, Old National once again hosted two concerts with very different crowds on the same night. Rap artist A$AP Ferg played directly above She Wants Revenge Friday night, pulling fans from genres that are nearly polar opposites. The contrast between the audiences was comical, but the show was anything but.

Local Jason Aaron Coons treated the Deluxe for the second time this year, although his sound wasn’t quite as congruous with She Wants Revenge as it was with Robert Delong. Regardless, he always puts a crowd in a good mood, if not from his bouncy keys, then from his comedy performance in between songs. “Tattoo” always makes me want to dance, and elicited some head bobbing from even the angstiest concertgoers.

LA natives Raw Fabrics got the crowd warmed up, taking it up a notch from JAC’s go-lucky vibe. Don’t be fooled by the pastel, retro vibes you’ll see if you Google them—these guys pack a punch. Mixing the best of indie rock with a crazy-passionate vocalist, Raw Fabrics delivered smooth energy with a bite.

You know what’s a great way to get the crowd into the opener? Get the opener into the crowd. Literally. When lead vocalist Jack jumped into the crowd with a drum, it was all the good vibes of a house show.

To understand the mood of the She Wants Revenge set, imagine the goth kids from high school started a band, then aged 20 years. As people, they’re as down to earth as can be, but once they hit the stage, they make it clear that they’re much more sophisticated than you. Their stage presence works—the lights, the fog, the attitude, paired with the hypnotizing sound produces a show that is an effect, rather than an event.

Vocalist Justin Warfield creates an exceptional atmosphere of eeriness. His voice is something similar to that of Frankenstein, and his lyrics are especially unnerving when coupled with his monotone. His voice is smooth and his dancing is smoother, and his live band brings him to life.

Despite the calm demeanors on stage, the crowd at the Deluxe was overwhelming. They were outrageously loud, especially for being so small in numbers. A$AP Ferg was supposedly “lit,” but She Wants Revenge certainly brought enough of their own kind of energy to Old National.

While I think Indy can agree we want them back, most of us would agree that getting some new tracks is the priority. It’s been like, five years guys.
